DOUBLE HEADER RECAP
I finally beat the traffic around the Baltimore beltway to visit Archbishop Spalding High School for a double header matchup between the McDonogh Eagles and Spalding Cavaliers. Yes, both JV and Varsity volleyball teams. There was a huge crowd turnout. Anticipation could be felt entering in to the Cavalier gymnasium. Both squads seemed very focused during their warmups. Game faces were on, these ladies were locked in. It wasnβt hard to tell the stage was set for two big volleyball battles. Not going to go in to each set like normal, but will summarize as best as possible these two matches.
JV MATCH
McDonogh started off really well in both sets. At each set beginning, the Eagles added early points. The Cavaliers seemed to play catch until they did actual catch up to win the two matches. Interestingly, the match scores were exactly the same. Each team played with intensity. The Eagles would have some good sets to kills, then Spalding some. In the end, the Cavaliers prevailed through a difficult fight. It did not look easy.
VARSITY MATCH
The first two sets for the varsity were dominated by the Cavaliers. Spalding came out strong on these sets. It was the third set, which in my opinion, was the most exciting. Eagles attacked early, serving up a few aces, and getting rewarded some points. Then Spalding found their mojo and tied the set up. Back and forth ensued for pretty much the rest of time. Kills were apparent from both teams. It got really intense nearing the end. The Eagles tied the period up, 24-24. However, the Cavaliers finished the set 26-24. Quite the set to say the least. Amazing is a better term to describe it.
OVERALL, both of these teams are fighters. They are tough to beat. I was thoroughly impressed at just how each play the game (speaking about both the JV and Varsity). Communication was excellent. Setters worked well with their hitters making some unstoppable hits. I wish nothing but SUCCESS to ALL of you ladies. Eagles, keep shining and working to the best of your ability. It was a joy to watch you play. CONGRATS to the Cavaliers on your sweeping victories. It takes a lot to win in the manner you did. Your hard work definitely paid off. Proud of you guys. It is evident you practice the little things that make the big ones shine out.
