The day was hot, highs up to 84 degrees. And the gym at New Town High School, even hotter. Yes because of the temps, but also because two 3A giants were about to face off in the MPSSAA State Semifinal.  Anne Arundel County’s hot 3A giant, the South River Seahawks and Baltimore City’s hottest, the City College Knights were preparing for war.  South River entered with a determination to take their team all the way to UMBC.  For City,  they were seeking to repeat from their championship victory in 2025. The arena was definitely set for some playoff action.

GAME RECAP

1ST HALF – I think it is safe to say this game was going to be physical. The question seems to linger can a county team handle the fast physical city ball. Well the Knights drew first blood. South River played their game, with #24 Jonah Hall dropping some tres to give the Seahawks the lead.  However, the Knights would not let that impeded them, led by their star point guard #0 Rasheed Muhammed, City began to takeover.  With a bit of back and forth, the Knights maintained a 4 point lead going  in to the half, 28-24.

2ND HALF – South River made a statement, dropping tres and getting some key turnovers by #22 Jaden McDuiffie. It was the Seahawks grit and tenacity which lead them to take lead in this half as well.  City faced with a challenge, did not break, and in the final seconds of the 4th period tied the game sending this playoff extravaganza in to overtime, 64-64.

OVERTIME – It was City again who jumped out in front. The shiftiness and quick thinking of PG Rasheed made this possible. They were seriously determined to win this game with only allotted 4 mins of time. However, in the ending minutes of the game, momentum switched when guard, #11 Korey Warren, landed a huge corner three.  It was at that point South River owned the matchup, adding a few more scores from free throws.

The amazing thing about the end, South River immediately went and celebrated their victory with their fans. It truly showed they understood the meaning of championship run.

CONGRATULATIONS SEAHAWKS, we couldn’t be more proud of the success you have accomplished. Our hope is that you finish strong. You guys have worked extremely hard. We want to see the fruit of that labor. TO THE KNIGHTS, MUCH LOVE and CONTINUED SUCCESS for you. You guys played with excellence. Proud of the goals and accomplishments you have met.  Keep grinding and shining.
