Engulfing the smell of that grass field at the beautiful school in Lusby, Maryland, Patuxent High School, is critical to ensuring one is about to witness the wonders of Southern Maryland Athletics Conference (aka SMAC) football. Two teams faced off here, the 2025 2A State Champions, Huntingtown Hurricanes against the Back-to-Back State title winners, Patuxent Panthers.

Huntingtown was on a four game, undefeated, win streak while the Panthers looked to bring upset at their homecoming game!!! MFV All Sports suspected this would be a slug match. These teams competing in SMAC, are high caliber, and games tend to sometimes be down to the wire. Critical plays are expected if you’re watching these kind of match ups.

OFF TO THE RACES

Winning the toss, Patuxent deferred and elected to receive the kickoff via second half. Huntingtown, tried to take advantage and immediately took it to the house (aka ALL THE SMOKE) at the beginning kickoff. Suddenly, dirty laundry appeared on the field. Penalty took away the touchdown. 1st and 10 now for the Hurricanes.

Patuxent endured a 14-0 run by their opponents before cashing in their first points on a goal-line run (successful because of the O-Line trench work). When watching Patuxent, it is not uncommon to see them return to victory from being down. It happened to them at 1A States last year, defeating dynasty giant Fort Hill.

Going in to the half though, the Panthers would face a tall task of coming back from a Canes 21-7 lead.

THE CHASE TO THE MOMENT

Not such a desired start to the second half as Huntingtown would get up to leading, 28-7, on the Panthers. But like said, it is not uncommon to see a comeback.

It was not unordinary, for Patuxent stuck to it and brought the deficit with 7 points in the 4th quarter. Their defense had gone in to overdrive, and with a minute and 23 seconds left, were on a critical drive for the end zone.

After being wowed all night, the anticipation was high as we were about to witness another comeback. Then, Hurricanes DB Xavier Jones, picks off the Panthers first play and heads untouched for a pick 6 touchdown. Everyone seemed to be shocked and completely awestruck at what just happened. Xavier secured the victory pretty much for the Canes. He read the pass beautifully, gained the advantage and created an historical moment for his team. Great job Jones, absolutely spectacular to say the least.

IT’S NOT OVER

Proud of the fight and dedication put forth by the Panthers. It hurts to not win, we understand, but you all still have a bright future ahead!!! You’re still the KINGSLAYERS, and that cannot be taken away from you. Watching you play this game is amazing, whether you win or lose.

CONGRATULATIONS Hurricanes, you guys played with excellence. That state win and the way you came out here shows you guys are a top notch program. A fire should be lit in you. You guys are GREAT.

Wishing both teams much future success. SPECIAL THANKS to AD Keith Powell and the whole Patuxent High School for the hospitality. It is always exciting filming in Lusby. Until next time, wishing you all nothing but the best.
