Cancer has had its effects on all of us as I discovered yesterday a treasured alum of St. Mary’s College, Brandon Jones, passed away earlier this week due to a stage 4 cancer battle. Walking in to Severn Run High School, MFV was flooded with a sea of pink decorations honoring those who’ve had their fight with breast cancer. Let us remember those going tough times and battles with cancer.

This night would be a night to remember not only for cancer cure research, but also that the Severn Run Wolves varsity volleyball team, as this matchup against the Arundel Wildcats would win their fight to land them into a spot to compete against the Broadneck Bruins in the Anne Arundel County Volleyball Championship.

How did we arrive there?

JV MATCHES

So thankful to be able to cover the JV sets. It was quite a joy watching them. The match was dominated by Arundel, as the Wolves fought hard to stay in it. Both teams did their best. It was a 2-0 victory for the Wildcats. However, the varsity game would be a different war.

THE VARSITY SETS

Look, these Arundel Wildcats played with passion. They struggled a bit in the first set as the Wolves started out on top of things. The next two sets belonged to the Wildcats and were not gained easily. A lot of tying, and attempts to gain advantage of their opponents’ weaknesses. They battled it out. Arundel claimed victory in sets 2 and 3.

However, these Wolves played like they were on fire. In set 4, they flamed through tough volleys to win it. Good communication kept them from interrupting a teammate’s attempt to save, let their setters set, and finish with key kills that shifted the game momentum.  They looked within to find that grit to gain their way to the top: which was their success. They finished the set winning and now tied with their opponent.

THE FINAL SET

This set had its challenges as both teams looked completely gassed by the end of set four. I don’t blame them either, these ladies seemed to be battling each other all night.

Understand this: Both the Wildcats and Wolves had enough fuel in the tank for one more set. It pretty much looked like Arundel had the game under control until they arrived at their 13th point. Up 13-8, the Wolves dug deep again and rallied back to tie it up 13-13.

Not going to lie, I was amazed they did it, not because of doubt, for I had thought in my mind at the 13-8 score, that it would be crazy nice if the Wolves came back and tied it. I’ll even move to a different spot to film these final moments if they happen. THEY HAPPENED. MFV All Sports was moving to a different location.

Now, 13-13, the Wildcats would be awarded their final point as Severn Run stayed locked in, prevented Arundel from scoring, and came out victorious winning the final set, 16-14. It was such an emotional win, we caught the Wolves coaches celebrating their, “going to the ship,” moment.
