All the attention was captured as the Oakland Mills marching band entered the stadium in preparation to honor their senior student-athletes. This game between the Howard Lions and the Oakland Mills Scorpions would do the same: demand our full attention.
Both teams were in a fight for the number one position in the MPSSAA Class 2A West standings. At both 7-1, being defeated by Guilford Park, each team had something to prove. Who was going to be the top dog in their region?
THE BATTLE OF DEFENSES
It was quite clear the 13-12 victory from the Scorpions came off the backs of a defensive contribution (not trying to dismiss any of their offensive efforts). Oakland Mills defense stopped many runs, closing off run lanes immediately and making critical turnovers at pivotal points. Even one of their scores came off a fumble recovery in the end zone, 2nd half, to put the Scorpions up 13-6.
Howard’s defense as well put on a spectacular show. After allowing OM to go straight up the middle for a TD, the Lions sealed up off any more attempts to take it up the middle. In fact, the Lions D must be applauded as the Scorpions only offensive points came in the first quarter.
The final score of 13-12, Scorpions, does not reflect the true defensive mastery of the game. Would these teams see each other again later down the road in the playoffs. I don’t know, but I would definitely look forward to rematch.
LIONS, GREAT TEAM YOU ARE!!!. Keep pushing and striving to be the best.
SCORPIONS, CONGRATULATIONS AND GREAT JOB, enjoy the win and celebrate now. Monday it’s back to work. KEEP SHINING.
SPECIAL THANK YOU to Oakland Mills athletics and school staff for such wonderful hospitality. Felt like being right at home.
