Unfortunately, the DMV does not possess all good coaches. Most likely we all have experienced a bad coach. Here are some helpful signs to know if a terrible coach is in your midst:

1 – FOCUSES ON THEMSELVES

A bad coach is ego driven. It is all about them and not the development of the team. THIS IS CLEAR. EVERYTHING they do will ultimately be focused on them.

2 – THEY DON’T COMMUNICATE

A bad coach doesn’t communicate. Making a speech or always talking at practices is no indication they communicate well. Bad coaches refuse to explain, give feedback, or even listen. You’ll be left trying to figure out what to do.

3 – THEY BLAME

Your coach is not excellent if always pointing fingers and making excuse. This person will literally blame individuals for foiled plays. Never will they take accountability, and may even say if you just follow their instructions, mistakes would not happen. Good coaches don’t talk like this, only bad ones.

4 – THEY DON’T DEVELOP

These coaches DO NOT TEACH, make no attempts to challenge you or even help your development. Reason? They either can’t teach or are lazy.

5 – LOSING IS A NORM

This doesn’t mean a coach that has a losing season is a bad one. It’s what they do with it, do they tolerate L’s by blame shifting and threatening. They throw temper tantrums like a baby. They stay doing the same thing never setting a standard to get better. They don’t demand excellence out of themselves and others. And so, the losing mentality continues.

WHAT NEXT???

It is not just coaches that are good or terrible. It’s players, and others. It is the culture. Next time we will discuss 5 signs you know you’re in a winning culture. Thank you for reading. Have a blessed day community.
