Now we are switching our focus from coaches to sports culture. In the DMV, we have plenty of winning teams showcased all during the season. The measure of this should not centered around number of state championships. Instead, look at these five indications to know you’re in a place of victory:
1 – EVERYONE HAS BOUGHT IN
There will be a clear distinction that ALL believe and strive for the same goal. The evidence will be a visible unified front to achieve success, not just during school or at practices, but around in the community. And this leads to the next sign.
2 – HIGH STANDARDS ALL THE TIME
You are expected to be great, from the talented to the non-gifted. No excuses, everyone is pushed to be the best they can be.

3 – ACCOUNTABILITY IS A REAL THING
Here’s where the rubber meets the road for knowing your in a healthy sports environment, people hold one another accountable. No one gets off the hook. If mistakes are made, people are taking responsibility for their actions. Individuals make sure all are being held to the high standards of excellence.
4 – ONGOING GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
The morale is people are continually trying to get better and better each day. Players and coaches grow. Areas of weakness grow to places of strength. Development is the norm.

5 – RESULTING SUCCESS
The wins come, and if there is loss, it’s done with dignity and respect (teams know how to lose, and probably are looking on how to get better). As the time progresses, the culture wins, on and off the field/court.
If you see these signs, be joyful, you’re in the right place. Unfortunately this is not a reality for every high school athlete. Next time, we’ll explore the signs of a toxic culture. Thanks for tuning in.
