Loved the energy surrounding Old Mill High School last night as the rain poured outside, varsity volleyball action was ready to start inside the Patriots gymnasium. And in Anne Arundel County, two familiar foes faced off here: Northeast vs Old Mill. To our surprise, the victory would be determined by the final set!!! These two awesome volleyball programs were undefeated. Who was walking away victorious the evening? Let’s briefly explore each set of this fantastic game.
SET ONE – We’re On Top
Northeast grabbed the first points as they were granted to serve first. Old Mill answered back striking a kill in a vulnerable spot of the Eagles defense. The set was close until about midway, as the Patriots pulled off to a sizable lead. Near the end, a comeback ensued but Old Mill Patriots were on top winning the set, 25-17, after being awarded a point disputed between the referees.
SET TWO – We’re In This
The second set started off absolutely different from the first. It was clear dominance by the Eagles, who scored the first 10 points unscathed. But once Old Mill gained focus, they made a pretty good effort in coming back bringing Northeast’s lead within three points. The Eagles, Sophie Bossom, delivered some excellent serves which helped push the lead back up to where now Northeast showed they were still in this game fight. The set ended with an Eagles victory, 25-19.
SET THREE – We Got This
Old Mill returned the favor, coming out as the dominating team this set. Good serving and attacking the Eagles where they least expected helped maintain their flow. They started out 8 points ahead without a score by Northeast. The Patriots kept on driving, determined to finish out the set victorious. Despite Northeast’s efforts to catch up, Old Mill proved they had this! The match was one by a Patriots kill, 25-18.
SET FOUR – We’re Not Done
This was the TIE set: Every time you turned around, someone was tying the set. At one point a discrepancy arose in the score during a time Old Mill was gaining momentum. However, Northeast was not done, gaining a lead, and then broke a tie at 23-23, winning 25-23. This was the closest set of the night. It displayed both teams had excellent communication, discipline and drive to push through adversity. It was all coming down to the final set
SET FIVE – We Did It
Honestly, we didn’t think these teams would come this far. We entered the final determination set of who was leaving undefeated. Set five started out in Old Mill’s favor, but Northeast would keep inching up, not leaving too big a lead margin for the Patriots. Old Mill was all in though, making big plays at pivotal moments of the volley. As they closed in on 15 points, they had gained the momentum to complete the task: THEY DID IT. And the Old Mill Patriots walked away still undefeated. The final set score: 15-8.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This was by far the most exciting volleyball game of the season. Two very well coached teams battled it out here at Old Mill High.
GOOD JOB EAGLES, so proud of you guys. You ladies continue to grow and become better. Though it was a hard defeat, you guys got a fight in you that will bring more victories in future. Love you guys. STAY SHINING & GRINDING!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS OLD MILL PATRIOTS. You guys are SUPER!! You have excellent determination and we were really impressed with your communication. Your coaches appear to instill a lot of good motivation and encouragement in you. You can see that when a mistake happens and teammates surround in support. Proud of what you’ve accomplished here.
