Malik Washington’s Friday Night Lights: Letting the Kids Shine

WHEN Malik Washington attended the wonderful Archbishop Spalding, one of the things noticeable is their emphasis on giving back freely to upcoming generations. Whether that be through charity work, or sacrificing your normal recreational hours for the em betterment of others; make sure your giving to others. That is exactly the focus Malik Washington’s Friday Night Lights sought to accomplish: MAKE THE KIDS SHINE!!!

 

PRE-CAMP

Upon entering the camp, volunteers made sure to stress to MFV All Sports Network the camp’s focus: Capture the kids. Make sure to highlight them to create lasting memories. We noted and made our way in to the venue. Camp had not started because massive traffic was on the major highway leading into Under Armour Stadium. Washington wanted to ensure people were able to get there in time so kids would not miss on an unforgettable occasion.

We noticed volunteers taking time out to greet campers, throw them some passes and do what they can to help them get ready. Malik came out with the same energy—not focused on himself. He walked in giving  hi-fives to campers exuberayting excitement on their faces. Once assembled, Washington gave an overview of the events for the night.

THE CAMP EXPERIENCE consisted of different segments including stretches, drills, different skill level stations, fun challenges, and to top the night off championship rounds of Flag 7v7. It was very evident from start to finish, the campers were engaged. Listening intently to almost every word their leader’s instructions.  Even more, we noticed kids just having fun. That’s when it clicked, this is truly what this night was about. Malik, the volunteers, and parents all wanted to create an experience for the community to remember FOREVER. The smiles these kids had was proof enough the impression had been made.

One camp memory I’ll cherish was the absolute joy seen on Maryland’s Terrapin’s Football Tight End Coach, Kyle Schmitt’s face. He expressed the greatness of being out there for children.

The best shine amongst the younger generation was the championship for Flag 7v7. Both games, an elementary and middle school division, ended in sudden death. Both decided by a critical pass stopped by the defense. These were moments the campers will remember all the days of their lives.

THE TAKEAWAY is simple: observe the shine these kids received. The hope is that one day Malik’s Friday Night Lights Free Camp will lead to them wanting to make lasting moments on other people feom their communities. 

In essence, it is ultimate compliment to giving back.
